You Have To Shock Your Body!

Sitting disgruntled at yet another pair of slacks that don't fit, I was becoming depressed. I have never had a weight problem in my life and even loved to brag that after the births of my now grown children, I was the one who could slip right back into a size 5 jean.

I mentioned this to a close family member who works as a certified physical fitness trainer. I explained that I have walked 3 miles almost everyday for 20 years. I cut back on my meals and I even took up drinking that tasteless, bland beverage known as water. I wanted a quick fix to this problem. I have a wedding to go to!

He looked me up and down and stated, "You have to shock your body"! What was he talking about? I shock my body everyday when I get out of the shower and see the image staring back at me from the mirror. What kind of advice is that from a professional to a non-paying family member?

After his explanation, it turns out that it was "very good" advice. He explained that my body knew the routine. I walked the same route, with an even paced stride everyday. I would always stroll up the 1/4 mile hill before making my descend back home. My body in a sense was on cruise control.

When a car is placed on cruise control the gasoline is distributed evenly and the vehicle can consume less to maintain its speed. Take the same car out of cruise control and floor it. You will have just consumed an enormous amount of gasoline in a short period of time. Now I had to incorporate this idea, into my calorie burning efforts during my walks.

Lucky for me I had the dreaded hill. On my next walk as I approached the hill, I power walked it. I was out of breath, but was able to keep up the pace. I continued power walking that hill for the first week. The second week, I began to jog the hill. I wanted to shock my body into "hysteria." I have incorporated light weights into this routine and am happy to report I have already lost 3 pounds. I have such smart family members!
